Job Description

The Animal Referral Hospital is one of the most respected emergency and specialist veterinary hospitals in Sydney. Located in Homebush in Sydney’s Inner West, we offer a wide range of specialist services and provide 24-hour emergency and critical care to referring Veterinarians and the public. We pride ourselves on offering the highest standard of patient care with a focus on offering our clients the best standard of customer service. We have a dedicated Critical Care Unit with state-of-the-art equipment to provide dedicated care to the most critically ill patients. Our Critical Care Unit is staffed with Critical Care Specialists and highly experienced Veterinary Nurses and Technicians, 365 days of the year.

What we are looking for:

The Animal Referral Hospital in Homebush is seeking an experienced Critical Care/ICU nurse or VTS to join our close-knit team that is dedicated to the best possible patient outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing amazing nursing care to critically ill and injured patients in our dedicated Critical Care Unit
  • Working directly with our skilled veterinary team, including 3 highly respected Critical Care Specialists, to deliver timely and effective treatment and patient care
  • Collaboration between all departments to ensure best patient outcomes. We often will help with their patients of have them housed in our Critical Care space if required.
  • Monitoring of critically ill patients including patients undergoing mechanical ventilation and high-flow oxygen therapy, TIVA, administer medications and blood products, assist with medical and surgical procedures as needed.
  • Assist with and perform IV catheter placement, advanced line placement (Central lines, arterial lines, PICC lines), blood collection and diagnostic imaging
  • Participate in and lead CPR as per RECOVER guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with hospital protocols
  • Client communication, providing advice, answering questions and supporting clients during stressful times
  • Assist in the development of protocols for the CCU space
  • Assist with training of emergency nurses within the CCU and supporting out trainee nurse program

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent with minimum 5yrs nursing experience
  • VTS in ECC desired but not essential
  • Previous experience working within an emergency and specialty hospital
  • Have a passion to advance their skills with regular CE as well as mentorship of other nurses
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to multitask and prioritise
  • Ability to provide high quality patient care even in busy conditions
  • A friendly, team player attitude - team culture is very important to us!
  • Demonstrates strong written and oral communication skills
