The Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is a national infrastructure facility and a leader in the application and development of genomics in Australia. It is the largest genomics facility at any Australian University and is comprehensively equipped with the latest next-generation sequencing technology, with expression analysis platforms and with high throughput microarray systems. The Centre’s purpose is to deliver high quality genomic data to its clients and position UNSW as a leader in the field of genomics.

The Centre currently analyses over 60,000 samples per annum using NGS and 40,000 samples by other genomic technology. It utilises numerous library preparation procedures and operates several sequencing platforms. The Centre holds NATA ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

The Research Assistant is responsible for performing sample QC and library preparation procedures and for implementing new or modified procedures or processes under guidance. To fulfil the requirements of the position, laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques is essential, along with the ability to work with high sample volumes in a time sensitive work environment.

About the role

  • $85K - $96K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 14 months (MAT Leave Cover)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to the Senior Research Officer and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Perform quality control checks, independently evaluate results and prepare customer reports.
  • Prepare samples for sequencing using a variety of complex methods, both manually and using liquid handling robots.
  • Accurate entry of laboratory processes/results into laboratory information management systems.
  • Inform clients on the progress of their project throughout sample quality control and/or sample preparation procedures.
  • Train laboratory personnel in the above techniques as required.
  • Log and monitor critical stock levels ensuring resources are available for timely project completion.
  • Quality assurance: Responsible for following the relevant quality procedures and processes in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Research Officer, Director or Deputy Director of the Centre.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policy and procedures of the University and take all reasonable care to ensure your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself and others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A Degree in molecular biology, genetics or a related discipline, an Honours degree is preferable. This position requires a good understanding of the principles of molecular biology.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively to deliver results for concurrent workflows
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory-based work using high-throughput molecular biology techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and work both independently, as well as part of a team to deliver project outcomes.
  • High level organisation skills and attention to detail is essential.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Prior work experience in an accredited or regulated laboratory is desirable. An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
