We are seeking an Occupational Hygienist to lead and set the standard for managing occupational hygiene across John Holland, ensuring compliance with legal obligations and company requirements.

This role can be based in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne, with nationwide travel required.

The primary purpose of this position is to establish the strategic direction for occupational hygiene practices and ensure alignment across all business units and projects. The role provides expert occupational hygiene support and guidance to enable safe, healthy and compliant outcomes across the organisation.

About the Role

  • Conduct workplace exposure assessments for physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards, including dust, noise, vibration, asbestos, and hazardous substances.
  • Monitor and measure exposure levels using appropriate equipment and methodologies.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian health and safety regulations, including the WHS Act and Regulations, as well as international standards.
  • Develop and implement occupational hygiene policies and procedures aligned with John Holland’s safety management system.
  • Maintain accurate records of exposure monitoring data and risk assessments.
  • Prepare detailed reports on occupational hygiene findings, including recommendations for effective control measures.
  • Develop and implement control measures such as engineering solutions, administrative practices, and PPE to minimise occupational health risks.
  • Provide expert advice on ventilation systems, chemical storage, and safe work practices.
  • Deliver training and awareness programs to employees and contractors on occupational health hazards and control strategies.
  • Provide guidance on proper use of PPE and other safety equipment to ensure workplace safety.
  • Assist in investigating incidents related to occupational health risks and exposures.
  • Recommend corrective and preventative actions based on incident investigations.
  • Collaborate with project teams, safety professionals, regulators, auditors, and external consultants to address occupational hygiene concerns.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory changes in occupational hygiene.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of John Holland’s safety management systems and processes.
  • Actively participate in John Holland’s safety initiatives and programs to promote a culture of safety.
  • Ensure adherence to all workplace health and safety policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Promptly report any identified hazards, incidents, or near misses to support proactive risk management.

About You

You have experience leading and setting standards for occupational hygiene and providing expert guidance to support safe and compliant workplace outcomes.

Requirements for this role include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Health, Science, or a related field
  • Current certification or membership with a recognised occupational hygiene body (e.g. Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists – AIOH)
  • Proven experience in occupational hygiene, preferably within construction, infrastructure or heavy industry environments
  • Hands‑on experience conducting exposure monitoring and risk assessments
  • Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, codes of practice and Australian Standards
  • Proficiency in using occupational hygiene monitoring equipment (e.g. air sampling pumps, noise dosimeters)
