The Dermatology Research Unit at the Alfred is one of the major Dermatology clinical trial centres in Australia. It is part of the Alfred Dermatology Department, the tertiary referral centre for South-Eastern Melbourne and rural Victoria. We are currently running multiple clinical trials for inflammatory and autoimmune skin disease as well as non-melanoma skin cancers.

This allows offering treatment options otherwise unavailable for patients with serious chronic skin conditions and being involved with shaping future treatments in Dermatology. The team includes Prof Johannes Kern, Senior Dermatologist Principal Investigators, Research Nurses, Doctors (Clinical and Trial Fellow) and admin staff. It works closely with the VMS clinical and research teams.

The Alfred Dermatology Clinical and Trials Fellow position provides the opportunity to work in a clinical and research role together with senior consultants, accredited registrars and research nurses. The role includes undertaking scheduled study visits for current clinical trials, performing disease severity assessments, checking for adverse events, collection of blood samples, ECG collection and administration of study drugs. You will also have the opportunity to work closely with the Alfred Dermatology general clinics and undertake a personal research project with the aim of publication.

Reporting to Prof Johannes Kern, the position is currently 2 days per week and would suit a medical practitioner who is PGY2+ and interested in applying for the Australasian College of Dermatologists training program in future. The successful applicant should expect to commence in January 2026. The Dermatology Clinical and Trials Fellow should be ideally combined with a VMS Registrar position and parallel application is encouraged.
