The Lead Astronomy Guide is a specialist role responsible for the delivery, leadership, and continual enhancement of professional astronomy tourism experiences. The position requires advanced technical knowledge of observational astronomy and the ability to translate this expertise into high-quality, structured astronomy tours for domestic and international visitors.

This role goes beyond general tour guiding and involves the design, interpretation, and delivery of technically sophisticated stargazing experiences, incorporating telescope-based observation, celestial navigation, and science-based interpretation of astronomical phenomena. The Lead Astronomy Guide applies formal training in astronomy or a closely related scientific discipline to ensure all programs are accurate, engaging, and aligned with recognised scientific standards.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead engaging and well-structured night-sky tours for domestic and international visitors.
  2. Deliver clear, enthusiastic, and accessible explanations of stars, planets, constellations, and astronomical phenomena.
  3. Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that encourages curiosity, questions, and participation.
  4. Assist with the setup, operation, and pack-down of telescopes and related equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  5. Support basic telescope use during tours and assist guests to safely view celestial objects.
  6. Monitor weather and sky conditions to adapt tour content and flow as required.
  7. Use laser pointers and optical equipment safely and responsibly in accordance with Australian safety standards.
  8. Maintain a strong focus on guest safety, comfort, and enjoyment during night-time operations.
  9. Follow established tour scripts, interpretive frameworks, and operational guidelines while adding personal style and warmth.
  10. Support the care, storage, and cleanliness of astronomy equipment.
  11. Work collaboratively with other guides and supervisors to ensure smooth tour operations.

Essential Qualifications & Experience Mandatory

  1. Experience working in a tour guiding, hospitality, education, or customer-facing role.
  2. Strong communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  3. A genuine interest in astronomy, science, or the night sky.
  4. Confidence presenting information to groups in an outdoor or night-time environment.
  5. Ability to follow procedures and operate equipment safely after training.
  6. A reliable, professional, and safety-conscious approach to work.
  7. Willingness to work evenings and nights, including weekends.

Desirable

  1. Previous experience in tourism, guiding, outdoor education, or visitor experience roles.
  2. Familiarity with basic astronomy concepts or night-sky interpretation.
  3. Experience working with international visitors or culturally diverse groups.
  4. First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain one.
